Gabriel Garcia MarquezGabriel Garcia Marquez, who was considered one of the greatest Spanish-language authors ever, died at the age of 87 years in Mexico City on 17 April 2014.  He was best known for his masterpiece of magical realism, ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’. The 1967 novel sold more than 30 million copies and he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982. The Chilean poet and Nobel Laureate Pablo Neruda called the novel “the greatest revelation in the Spanish language since ‘Don Quixote“, the 17th-century masterpiece by Spain’s Miguel de Cervantes. His extraordinary literary celebrity spawned comparisons with Mark Twain and Charles Dickens.

He was considered as the greatest Colombian and with his books, he brought Latin America’s charm and teaming contradictions to life in the minds of millions of people. His other books included ‘Autumn of the Patriarch’ (1975), ‘Chronicle of a Death Foretold’ (1981), ‘Love in the Time of Cholera’ (1985) and ‘News of a Kidnapping’ (1996). His last book, ‘Memories of My Melancholy Whores’ was published in 2004.

The Swedish newspaper was recently asked it to delete the reference made by President Pranab Mukherjee to the Bofors scam in an interview to it, as a claim protested by the Indian Government on 27 May 2015. India has expressed disappointment over the disrespect shown to the President, the newspaper has defended its right to publish what was said during the interview.

He was appointed head of newly constituted committee to give recommendations to recast the model of Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) model in India. India is one of the largest PPP market with over 900 projects. The Kelkar committee will review the PPP policy, suggest a better risk-sharing mechanism between private developers and the government after analysing such projects.

Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar was crowned as the new Maharaja of of Mysuru (Mysore) royal family. He is the 23-year old grandson of Princess Gayathri Devi, who was the eldest daughter of the last Maharaja of Mysore, Sri Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar. The coronation was held at Mysuru’s famous Amba Vilas Palace, which was decked up for the occasion.
