1) In a major step towards breaking gender barriers in the Indian Army, the Army took the decision to induct 800 women in which wing on 8 September 2017? – Military Police

Explanation: Indian Army on 8 September 2017 took the decision to induct women in the Military Police wing. Initially, 800 women will be inducted in the military police, a wing in which women were not allowed till now. Since 1992 women are allowed in select areas in the military such as administrative wing and logistical wing. However, women have been the part of army’s medical core for many decades.

The decision came a day after Nirmala Sitharaman took charge of the Defence Ministry on 7 December 2017 to become the first-ever full-fledged woman Defence Minister.

2) What is the name of Pakistan’s largest private bank that was ordered by US banking regulators to shutter its New York office over terror financing concerns on 7 September 2017? – Habib Bank Limited (HBL)

Explanation:  Habib Bank Limited (HBL) that has operated in the United States since 1978 was ordered to close its New York office by US Department of Financial Services (USDFS) on 7 September 2017. The bank was also slapped a $225 million fine.

USDFS is the banking regulator in the US and it imposed strictures on Habib Bank for repeatedly failing to heed concerns over possible terrorist financing and money laundering.

According to regulators, Habib Bank had facilitated billions of dollars of transactions with Saudi private bank, Al Rajhi Bank, which reportedly has links to al Qaeda, and failed to do enough to ensure that the funds were not laundered or used for terrorism.

It is worth mentioning that in 2006 the bank was ordered to tighten its oversight of potentially illegal transactions but failed to comply.

3) According to the conclusions made in a recent academic research study, which uninhabited island of the Lakshadweep Archipelago has vanished due to coastal erosion? – Parali I

Explanation: R.M. Hidayathulla, a research scholar from Lakshadweep, in his recently awarded PhD thesis titled “Studies on Coastal Erosion in Selected Uninhabited Islands of Lakshadweep Archipelago with Special Reference to Biodiversity Conservation” has pointed out an uninhabited island (Parali I) in the archipelago has vanished due to coastal erosion.

Parali I is part of Bangaram atoll and was spread over 0.032 square km in 1968. It has now eroded completely resulting in its inundation, the study claimed. It is also claimed that four such territories in the sea are also shrinking fast.

The above said research was awarded PhD in July 2017 by Calicut University in Kerala. C C Harilal, Hidayathulla’s guide in the research, said submergence of Parali I was noticed when he visited the Bangram atoll in 2011.

4) Who was appointed the new Chief Coach of the Indian men’s Hockey team by the Sports Ministry on 8 September 2017? – Sjoerd Marijne

Explanation: In an almost stunning decision, Union Sports Ministry on 8 September 2017 appointed Sjoerd Marijne of the Netherlands as the Chief Coach of Indian men’s Hockey team. He is presently the Chief Coach of national women’s Hockey team.

His appointment was surprising as he has no prior experience of handling a senior men’s side. He replaced his countryman Roelant Oltmans, who was sacked on 2 September 2017 after a few ordinary performances in the past few months.

On the other had World Cup-winning junior hockey team coach Harendra Singh was appointed High Performance Specialist coach of the senior women’s team.

The decisions were announced by newly-appointed Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore on his official twitter page. It is worth mentioning that Hockey India (HI) had advertised seeking Oltmans’ successor on its website just three days ago and 15 September 2017 was the deadline to apply for the post. This advertisement was withdrawn on 7 September 2017.

5) Who was elected the new Chairman of Press Trust of India (PTI) on 7 September 2017? – Viveck Goenka

Explanation: Viveck Goenka, Chairman and Managing Director of the Express Group, was selected the new Chairman of Press Trust of India (PTI), the pre-eminent news service in India. The election was held at PTI’s 69th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 7 September 2017. N Ravi, former editor-in-chief of ‘The Hindu’ was elected the Vice-Chairman. Both of them were elected unanimously.

Goenka, who was earlier the vice-chairman, succeeded Riyad Mathew of the Malayala Manorama group. He has been heading the Express Group since the mid-1990s. The group runs English newspapers The Indian Express and The Financial Express, Marathi newspaper Loksatta, Hindi newspaper Jansatta and a host of news websites.

He was appointed head of newly constituted committee to give recommendations to recast the model of Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) model in India. India is one of the largest PPP market with over 900 projects. The Kelkar committee will review the PPP policy, suggest a better risk-sharing mechanism between private developers and the government after analysing such projects.

Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar was crowned as the new Maharaja of of Mysuru (Mysore) royal family. He is the 23-year old grandson of Princess Gayathri Devi, who was the eldest daughter of the last Maharaja of Mysore, Sri Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar. The coronation was held at Mysuru’s famous Amba Vilas Palace, which was decked up for the occasion.

Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan stood against Blatter in this election. It is worth mentioning that FIFA is going through a major controversy regarding corruption in the organisation with two FIFA vice presidents and a recently elected FIFA executive committee member still in custody.
