1) What is the name of the coalition of NGOs that was chosen for the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize on 6 October 2017 for its efforts to abolish nuclear weapons? – International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN)

Explanation: International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), a coalition of non-governmental organisations from over 100 countries around the globe with its headquarters in Geneva (Switzerland), has been awarded the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize. This was announced by the Nobel Prize committee on 6 October 2017.

ICAN describes itself as a coalition of grass roots non-government groups in more than 100 nations. It began in Australia and was officially launched in Vienna in 2007. It is presently led by Beatrice Fihn.

According to the prize committee ICAN has been the leading civil society actor in the effort to achieve a prohibition of nuclear weapons under international law. It was chosen for this prestigious award for its work to draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons and for its ground-breaking efforts to achieve a treaty-based prohibition of such weapons.

2) Who was awarded the 2017 Nobel Literature Prize, as announced by the Swedish Academy on 5 October 2017? – Kazuo Ishiguro

Explanation: Japan-born British author Kazuo Ishiguro, best known for his novel ‘The Remains of the Day’, won the 2017 Nobel Literature Prize. This was announced by the Swedish Academy on 5 October 2017.

64-year-old Ishiguro was born in Japan and his family moved to the United Kingdom when he was five. His most renowned novel, The Remains of the Day (1989), was turned into film with Anthony Hopkins as the butler Stevens.

He has written eight books, as well as scripts for film and television. The themes most associated with him are – memory, time, and self-delusion.

3) India made its debut in a football tournament of truly global appeal as India hosts any FIFA tournament for the first time in the form of FIFA U-17 World Cup from 6 October 2017. India faced which country in its inaugural match? – USA

Explanation: Football made a grand entry into India with the inauguration of the 2017 FIFA under-17 World Cup at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi on 6 October 2017. This is the 17th edition of the prestigious tournament and was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The first match of the tournament was held between Ghana and Colombia and was won by Ghana (1-0). India’s inaugural match was held with the USA. USA dominated the match and defeated India convincingly by 3-0. It is worth mentioning that India is taking part in a FIFA tournament for the first time and this is due to it being the host country.

4) Who was appointed the new Chairman of India’s largest commercial bank State Bank of India (SBI) to take over from Arundhati Bhattacharya who retired on 6 October 2017? – Rajnish Kumar

Explanation: 59-year old Rajnish Kumar is the new Chairman of State Bank of India (SBI). He succeeds Arundhati Bhattacharya whose tenure ended on 6 October 2017. He is the the senior most of the managing directors at SBI. He is the 25th Chairman of the bank. He joined the bank as a probationary officer in 1980 and served in positions including head of SBI Capital Markets Ltd, the bank’s investment banking unit.

His appointment comes at a time when SBI’s profitability is under strain because of ballooning bad loans and sluggish credit growth. At the end of June, the bank was weighed down by gross non-performing loans of Rs. 1.88 trillion.

Arundhati Bhattacharya, who was the first woman chairperson of the 200-year-old state-owned bank, was instrumental in the merger of SBI’s associate banks and Bharatiya Mahila Bank with SBI. In her tenure, the bank saw the listing of its life insurance subsidiary, the first among public sector banks.

5) President Ramnath Kovind visited which country as his first official overseas visit on 4 October 2017? – Djibouti

Explanation: On 4 October 2017 African country Djibouti became President Ramnath Kovind’s first official overseas destination after assuming the charge of President of India during July 2017. He also became the first Indian leader to visit the country.

During his first overseas visit, the President is also visiting Ethiopia as the second leg of the visit.

The Swedish newspaper was recently asked it to delete the reference made by President Pranab Mukherjee to the Bofors scam in an interview to it, as a claim protested by the Indian Government on 27 May 2015. India has expressed disappointment over the disrespect shown to the President, the newspaper has defended its right to publish what was said during the interview.

Vijay Kelkar is a renowned economist and a former Finance Secretary. He was appointed head of newly constituted committee to give recommendations to recast the model of Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) model in India. India is one of the largest PPP market with over 900 projects. The Kelkar committee will review the PPP policy, suggest a better risk-sharing mechanism between private developers and the government after analysing such projects.

Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar was crowned as the new Maharaja of of Mysuru (Mysore) royal family. He is the 23-year old grandson of Princess Gayathri Devi, who was the eldest daughter of the last Maharaja of Mysore, Sri Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar. The coronation was held at Mysuru’s famous Amba Vilas Palace, which was decked up for the occasion.

Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan stood against Blatter in this election. It is worth mentioning that FIFA is going through a major controversy regarding corruption in the organisation with two FIFA vice presidents and a recently elected FIFA executive committee member still in custody.
