1) The Union Government on 27 December 2017 reduced the interest rate on small savings schemes by what percent for Jan-Mar 2018 quarter? – 0.2%

Explanation: The Union Government reduced the interest rate on small savings schemes, including public provident fund (PPF), national savings certificate (NSC) and Kisan Vikas Patra, by 0.2 percentage points for the January-March 2018 quarter on 27 December 2017.

For January-March 2018 quarter PPF and NSC will fetch a lower annual rate of 7.6% while KVP will yield 7.3% and mature in 11 months. The girl child savings scheme Sukanya Samriddhi Account (SSA) will offer 8.1 from existing 8.3% annually. Term deposits of 1-5 years will fetch a lower interest rate of 6.6-7.4%, to be paid quarterly, while the five-year recurring deposit is pegged at 6.9%.

Interest rate in the five-year Senior Citizens Savings Scheme, however, has been retained at 8.3%. The interest rate on the senior citizens’ scheme is paid quarterly.

Since April 2016, interest rates of all small saving schemes have been recalibrated on a quarterly basis, but there was no change in small savings interest rates in the October-December 2017 quarter.

2) Who took over as the 14th Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh on 27 December 2017? – Jai Ram Thakur

Explanation: BJP leader Jai Ram Thakur took oath as the chief minister of Himachal Pradesh at a grand swearing-in ceremony held on 27 December 2017. He replaced Congress’ Virbhadra Singh.

Thakur, the five-time BJP MLA from Seraj constituency, was administered the oath by Himachal Governor Acharya Dev Vrat as the function held at the historic Ridge Maidan in Shimla. The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and it was the very first time that a prime minister attended the oath-taking ceremony in the state.

Thakur was elected to lead the state after the party’s chief ministerial candidate Prem Kumar Dhumal failed to register a win from his constituency in the recently held assembly polls. BJP had ousted the Congress from power in the state by winning 44 out of the 68 seats.

Earlier on 26 December 2017 Vijay Rupani was sworn in as the 16th Chief Minister of Gujarat along with 19 Ministers, including Nitin Patel, Deputy Chief Minister, after the BJP’s victory in the recent Assembly elections. This is Rupani’s second term as Gujarat Chief Minister.

3) Which university will host the 2018 edition of the Indian Science Congress during March 2018, the annual event which was initially scheduled to be hosted in Hyderabad? – Manipur University

Explanation: The 2018 edition of the prestigious Indian Science Congress (ISC) will be held at Manipur University, Imphal, in March 2018. Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA) on 27 December 2017 confirmed that Manipur University will host the event.

ISC is the largest congregation of scientists in India and sees several students, Nobel Laureates and scientists from India’s science academies in attendance.

The event was scheduled at the Osmania University (OU), Hyderabad, in the first week of January but had to be moved out due to “security problems.” This was the first time the 106-year-old ISC had to be postponed at the last minute.

4) Which Indian photographer was declared the National Geographic’s Nature Photographer of the Year 2017? – Jayaprakash Joghee Bojan

Explanation: Jayaprakash Joghee Bojan won the National Geographic’s Nature Photographer of the Year 2017 for his photograph of an orangutan crossing a river in the wilds of Borneo.

Bojan is from the Nilgiris and after living in Bengaluru for some years he shifter to Singapore when his wife was transferred there. His favourite subjects are primates, organutans in particular, the tiger and otters.

The Swedish newspaper was recently asked it to delete the reference made by President Pranab Mukherjee to the Bofors scam in an interview to it, as a claim protested by the Indian Government on 27 May 2015. India has expressed disappointment over the disrespect shown to the President, the newspaper has defended its right to publish what was said during the interview.

Vijay Kelkar is a renowned economist and a former Finance Secretary. He was appointed head of newly constituted committee to give recommendations to recast the model of Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) model in India. India is one of the largest PPP market with over 900 projects. The Kelkar committee will review the PPP policy, suggest a better risk-sharing mechanism between private developers and the government after analysing such projects.

Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar was crowned as the new Maharaja of of Mysuru (Mysore) royal family. He is the 23-year old grandson of Princess Gayathri Devi, who was the eldest daughter of the last Maharaja of Mysore, Sri Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar. The coronation was held at Mysuru’s famous Amba Vilas Palace, which was decked up for the occasion.

Swpp Blatter, was re-elected as FIFA president for a fifth term at the 65th Annual Congress of FIFA held at Zurich for four year term.

Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan stood against Blatter in this election. It is worth mentioning that FIFA is going through a major controversy regarding corruption in the organisation with two FIFA vice presidents and a recently elected FIFA executive committee member still in custody.
