1) Fidel Castro, the iconic revolutionary leader, former President and Prime Minister of Cuba, passed away on 25 November 2016 at the age of 90. He had assumed power in which year after leading the historic Cuban Revolution and ousting President Fulgencio Batista? – 1959

Explanation: Fidel Castro was a Cuban politician and revolutionary who governed the Republic of Cuba as Prime Minister from 1959 to 1976 and then as President from 1976 to 2008.

He led the armed revolt or the Cuban Revolution (1953-1959) against the authoritarian government of Cuban President Fulgencio Batista. At the age of 32, he was the youngest leader of Latin America.

Castro’s reign Cuba was marked by the U.S.-backed Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961 and the Cuban Missile Crisis a year later that brought the world to the brink of nuclear war. For decades, he served as an inspiration and source of support to revolutionaries from Latin America to Africa.

Castro ruled Cuba as a one-party state for almost 50 years before he handed over the reins to his younger brother Raul in 2008.

2) Veteran journalist Dileep Padgaonkar, who passed away on 25 November 2016, was the former Editor of which reputed English daily? – The Times of India

Explanation: Dileep Padgaonkar was the Editor of The Times of India (TOI) from 1986 to 1994. He returned as executive Managing Editor in 1998 and retired in 2002. Thereafter he continued with TOI in a consulting capacity.

In Oct 2010, he was nominated on a three-member panel of interlocutors for a dialogue with people and politicians of J&K.

Padgaonkar passed away at a hospital in Pune on 25 November. He was 72.

3) What is the name of the Chancellor of Nalanda University who on 25 November 2016 resigned from his post? – Prof. George Yeo

Explanation: Prof. George Yeo (Singapore) on 25 November 2016 resigned from the post of the Chancellor of Nalanda University.

In his strongly worded resignation letter to President Pranab Mukherjee, who is the Visitor of the University, Prof. Yeo said he was surprised with the decision of dissolving the Governing Board of the university.

Yeo was the second Chancellor of the university after Nobel laureate Prof. Amartya Sen. Sen had resigned in June 2015 and Yeo took over on 6 July 2015.

Nalanda University is the brainchild of the previous UPA Government, which wanted to develop a world class international university in Rajgir near the historic remains of Nalanda University in Bihar.

4) Who was named as the interim Chairman of Tata Steel on 25 November 2016? – O P Bhatt

Explanation: Independent director O P Bhatt was appointed the interim Chairman of steel behemoth Tata Steel. This decision was taken by the Board of Tata Steel that met on 25 November 2016, the second time since Cyrus Mistry was removed as Tata Sons chairman on 24 October 2016.

OP Bhatt was elected as the interim Chairman of the company till the extraordinary general meeting (EGM) of shareholders to be held on 21 December 2016. Six directors supported the resolution while three, including independent director Nusli Wadia, opposed the move.

Bhatt was appointed as an independent director of the company on 10 June 2013. He has served as the chairman of State Bank of India (SBI), India’s largest commercial bank.

5) What is the name of the portal and mobile app launched by the Civil Aviation Ministry on 25 November 2016 that aims to provide airline passengers a convenient and hassle-free air travel experience? – AirSewa

Explanation: AirSewa portal and mobile app was launched in New Delhi by Union Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajpathi Raju on 25 November 2016. It will be operated through an interactive web portal as well as through a mobile app for both android and iOS platforms.

AirSewa portal is an attempt to provide such a systematic approach to redressing passenger grievances. The portal will include a mechanism for grievance redressal, back-office operations for grievance handling, flight status/schedule information, airport Information and FAQs.

Through AirSewa, the major challenge to get the various players who are a part of the civil aviation ecosystem on to a common platform, has been achieved.

Vijay Kelkar is a renowned economist and a former Finance Secretary. He was appointed head of newly constituted committee to give recommendations to recast the model of Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) model in India. India is one of the largest PPP market with over 900 projects. The Kelkar committee will review the PPP policy, suggest a better risk-sharing mechanism between private developers and the government after analysing such projects.

Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar was crowned as the new Maharaja of of Mysuru (Mysore) royal family. He is the 23-year old grandson of Princess Gayathri Devi, who was the eldest daughter of the last Maharaja of Mysore, Sri Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar. The coronation was held at Mysuru’s famous Amba Vilas Palace, which was decked up for the occasion.

Swpp Blatter, was re-elected as FIFA president for a fifth term at the 65th Annual Congress of FIFA held at Zurich for four year term.

Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan stood against Blatter in this election. It is worth mentioning that FIFA is going through a major controversy regarding corruption in the organisation with two FIFA vice presidents and a recently elected FIFA executive committee member still in custody.
