1) Which entity became India’s first operational payments bank on 23 November 2016 as it offered its services in Rajasthan? – Airtel Payments Bank Ltd.

Explanation: Airtel Payments Bank Ltd. (APBL) On 23 November 2016 became the first payments bank to start operations in India by offering services in Rajasthan in a limited scale on pilot basis.

The pilot will run at 10,000 Airtel retail outlets where basic banking services will be provided. Airtel Payments Bank is planning to expand its merchant network in Rajasthan to 100,000 by the end of the year.

Bank accounts can be opened by customers without documents using Aadhaar based e-KYC. The subscriber’s mobile number would function as a bank account number and transfer from Airtel to Airtel phone numbers would be free.

Customers will be offered an interest rate of 7.25% on deposits in savings account, higher than the 4-6% commercial banks are offering.

It is worth mentioning that APBL was the first applicant to receive the final payments bank licence from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in April 2016. Kotak Mahindra Bank holds 19.9% in it.

Explanation: On 22 November 2016 U.S. President-elect Donald Trump chose South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. She will be the first woman and minority in Trump’s Cabinet and will replace Samantha Power.

She would also be the first ever Indian-American Cabinet rank official in any administration.

Born Nimrata “Nikki” Randhawa, Haley is the first minority and female Governor of South Carolina, a deeply conservative State with a long history of racial strife.

3) What is the name of India’s first female Merchant Navy captain who was on 21 November 2016 awarded by the IMO for exceptional bravery and thus became the first woman to receive this award? – Captain Radhika Menon

Explanation: Captain Radhika Menon created history as she received International Maritime Organisation (IMO’s) Certificate of Commendation for Exceptional Bravery at Sea on 21 November 2016. She thus became world’s first woman to receive this prestigious award.

This was awarded for her role in the dramatic rescue of seven fishermen from a sinking fishing boat in tumultuous Bay of Bengal waters in 2015. Menon was heading ‘Sampurna Swarajya’ vessel operated by the Shipping Corporation of India Limited (SCIL) when they saw fishing boat Durgamma off the coast of Gopalpur (Orissa), which was adrift following engine failure and loss of anchor in severe weather. It had 7 fishermen without food or drinks.

Menon ordered the rescue operation despite choppy weather. It took three arduous attempts in the lashing wind and rain before all seven weak and starving fishermen were rescued.

4) Renowned physicist and policy maker M.G.K. Menon passed away on 22 November 2016. He was associated with nurturing which famous institute? – Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR)

Explanation: M.G.K. Menon (full name Mambillikalathil Govind Kumar Menon), who passed away on 22 November 2016, was both a brilliant high energy particle physicist and an institution builder of Indian science. One of his most important contributions was nurturing the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, which his mentor Homi J. Bhabha founded in 1945.

He took many important responsibilities including membership of the Planning Commission (1982-89), chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization (1972), Scientific Advisor to the Prime Minister (1986-89), president-ships of the national science academies, Minister of State for Science and Technology and Education (1989-90) and many other positions.

Menon was a Rajya Sabha member from 1990-96 and a Padma Vibhushan awardee (1985), India’s second highest civilian award.

Explanation: Pankaj R Patel, chairman & managing director of Cadila Healthcare Ltd (Zydus Cadila), was on 21 November 2016 elected as the new President of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) for the year 2017.

He will replace Harshavardhan Neotia, Chairman of Ambuja Neotia Group.

Under Patel’s chairmanship, Zydus Cadila has emerged as a global pharmaceutical company that discovers, develops, manufactures and markets a broad range of healthcare therapies in over 50 countries worldwide.

He is the 23-year old grandson of Princess Gayathri Devi, who was the eldest daughter of the last Maharaja of Mysore, Sri Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar. The coronation was held at Mysuru’s famous Amba Vilas Palace, which was decked up for the occasion.
