1) India and Switzerland on 22 November 2016 signed a historic agreement for automatic sharing of information of Swiss bank accounts of Indians in a big move towards fighting black money stashed overseas. Under the agreement India will get the first such information from which month onwards? – September 2018

Explanation: Under the agreement, Switzerland will share information with India on Swiss bank accounts of Indians as of September 2018 and onwards. Swiss authorities will not share details about accounts held prior to that period, while the first such exchange will happen in September 2019.

For this the ‘Joint Declaration’ for implementation of Automatic Exchange of Information (AEOI) signed was signed on 22 November 2016. The AEOI was signed by CBDT Chairman Sushil Chandra and Deputy Chief of Mission of Swiss Embassy Gilles Roduit in New Delhi.

Switzerland, which has always been at the centre of the debate on black money allegedly stashed by Indians abroad, used to be known for very strong secrecy walls till a few years ago around its banking practices. A huge global pressure has resulted in Switzerland relenting on the tough secrecy clauses its local laws gave to the banks.



2) India on 21 November 2016 became associate member of which prestigious international body that runs the world’s largest nuclear and particle physics laboratory? – European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN)

Explanation: India on 21 November 2016 became the associate member of European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN), the world’s largest nuclear and particle physics laboratory. The agreement pertaining to this was signed by Sekhar Basu, chairman of Atomic Energy Commission and secretary of Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), and CERN director general Dr. Fabiola Gianotti at the DAE’s office in New Delhi.

CERN is the world’s largest nuclear and particle physics laboratory, where scientists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the Universe using the most sophisticated scientific instruments and advanced computing systems.

India had ‘observer’ status till September 2016, when the CERN Council adopted a resolution upgrading its position.

Becoming an associate member of CERN will enhance participation of young scientists and engineers in various CERN projects. With CERN membership, India also has to contribute a certain amount of money for research activities.

Presently CERN has 22 member states, four associate member states, and the observer status is given to four states and three International Organizations.



3) M. Balamuralikrishna, who passed away on 22 November 2016, was a very eminent personality associated with which field? – Carnatic music

Explanation: M. Balamuralikrishna (full name Mangalamapalli Balamuralikrishna) was an iconic Carnatic vocalist, playback singer, composer and actor.

He was also an accomplished violinist and once accompanied Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar, the pioneer of the modern-day Carnatic concert format.

A native of East Godavari district of the erstwhile Madras Presidency, his father Pattabiramaiah was a musician and his mother Sooryakanthamma was a veena player. He gave his first concert when he was nine. He became a child prodigy of Carnatic music.

He was awarded Padma Vibhushan, country’s second highest civilian award for his contribution towards Indian Art. He died in Chennai at the age of 86.


4) Senior Congress leader and Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy won the by-election from which Assembly constituency, the result of which was announced on 22 November 2016? – Nellithope

Explanation: Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy won the bypoll to the Nellithope Assembly constituency defeating AIADMK’s Om Sakthi Segar, by a margin of 11,144 votes.

Narayanasamy was not a member of Puducherry Assembly and 6 December 2016 was the decline for getting elected to the House. For this A. John Kumar of the Congress had vacated the seat to enable to contest the by-election.



5) Veteran Congress leader Ram Naresh Yadav passed away on 22 November 2016. He was a former Chief Minister of which state? – Uttar Pradesh

Explanation: Ram Naresh Yadav was a four-time MLA. He served as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh from 1977 to 1979 with the Janata Party. Yadav later joined the Congress.

The fag end of his political career, when he served as the Governor of Madhya Pradesh, was marred by his alleged involvement in the Vyapam scam. In 2015, the MP Special Task Force lodged an FIR against him for rigging forest guard exams conducted by Vyapam.

He was also a member of the Rajya Sabha. He passed away at SPGI Lucknow after prolonged illness. He was 89.

The Swedish newspaper was recently asked it to delete the reference made by President Pranab Mukherjee to the Bofors scam in an interview to it, as a claim protested by the Indian Government on 27 May 2015. India has expressed disappointment over the disrespect shown to the President, the newspaper has defended its right to publish what was said during the interview.

Vijay Kelkar is a renowned economist and a former Finance Secretary. He was appointed head of newly constituted committee to give recommendations to recast the model of Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) model in India. India is one of the largest PPP market with over 900 projects. The Kelkar committee will review the PPP policy, suggest a better risk-sharing mechanism between private developers and the government after analysing such projects.

Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar was crowned as the new Maharaja of of Mysuru (Mysore) royal family. He is the 23-year old grandson of Princess Gayathri Devi, who was the eldest daughter of the last Maharaja of Mysore, Sri Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar. The coronation was held at Mysuru’s famous Amba Vilas Palace, which was decked up for the occasion.

Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan stood against Blatter in this election. It is worth mentioning that FIFA is going through a major controversy regarding corruption in the organisation with two FIFA vice presidents and a recently elected FIFA executive committee member still in custody.
