1) What is the name of the Russian Ambassador to Turkey who was shot dead by a gunman in a shocking incident at a photo exhibition in Ankara on 19 December 2016? – Andrei Karlov

Explanation: Russian Ambassador to Turkey Andrei Karlov was several minutes into his speech at the embassy-sponsored exhibition in the Turkish capital, Ankara, when the gunman fired at least eight shots in the evening of 19 December 2016. Karlov died immediately.

The gunman was later identified as an off-duty Turkish policeman Mevlüt Mert Altıntas. After killing the Ambassador he shouted “Don’t forget Aleppo, don’t forget Syria!” and “Allahu Akbar”.

The assassination took place after several days of protests by the Turkish people over Russian involvement in the Syrian Civil War and the battle over Aleppo.

2) Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of India’s first ever ‘Indian Institute of Skills’ (IIS) in which city of Uttar Pradesh on 19 December 2016? – Kanpur

Explanation: In line with his vision of making India the skill capital of the World by empowering its youth to be more employable and self-sustainable, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 19 December 2016 laid the foundation stone of country’s first ‘Indian Institute of Skills’ (IIS) in Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh.

The IIS was conceptualized by Prime Minister during his visit to Singapore’s Institute of Technical Education (ITE). The IIS is being established by Union Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship in partnership with ITE.

Explanation: The Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO’s) apex decision making body, the Central Board of Trustees (CBT), on 19 December 2016 decided to lower the interest rate to 8.65% for the current fiscal (2016-17) from 8.8% in 2015-16.

As per the EPFO income projections, retaining 8.8% rate of interest for the current fiscal would have left a deficit of Rs. 383 crore.

In September 2016, the Government reduced interest rates on small savings schemes marginally by 0.1% for the October-December quarter of 2016-17, which resulted in lower returns on PPF, Kisan Vikas Patra, Sukanya Samriddhi Account, among others.

4) India notched up its highest Test score in an innings (759 for 7) as Karun Nair became the second Indian to score triple century in a Test match in the ongoing Test match against England in Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium on 19 December 2016. What was India’s highest test score till now? – 726 for 9 (declared)

Explanation: India bettered its highest score in a Test innings on 19 December 2016 as it amassed 759 runs for the loss of 7 wickets (innings declared) in the fifth Test match of the ongoing Test series against England. India’s previous best was 726 for 9 (declared) against Sri Lanka at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium in 2009.

India’s record innings was helped primarily by batsman Karun Nair, who in just his third Test innings, struck an unbeaten 303. He thus became just the second Indian batsman to score a triple century in a Test match. Virendra Sehwag has achieved this distinction twice. Karun also became the first player to covert his maiden Test century into a triple ton. Batsman K.L. Rahul had earlier contributed 199 runs in Indian score.

5) Which team won the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) title for 2016 on 18 December 2016? – Atletico de Kolkata

Explanation: Atletico de Kolkata defeated hosts Kerala Blasters in the final of 2016 Hero Indian Super League (ISL) on 18 December 2016 at Kochi to win its second ISL title.

The final was decided in the shoot-out after the teams finished level 1-1 in extra-time. Kolkata prevailed in the shoot-out by 4-3 as Kerala team sunk to another heartbreaking defeat in final. The two had met in the ISL’s inaugural edition in 2014 and Kolkata had triumphed then too with a last-minute goal.

The final was played in Kochi’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

6) Stephanie Del Valle was crowned Miss World 2016 in a glittering ceremony held in Washington D.C. on 19 December 2016. She is from which country? – Puerto Rico

Explanation: Stephanie Del Valle of Puerto Rico was crowned Miss World 2016 as she edged out runners-up from the Dominican Republic and Indonesia to win the top prize in the 66th edition of the Miss World pageant held in the US.

She was crowned by Miss World 2015 Mireia Lalaguna of Spain. She thus became the second titleholder from Puerto Rico after Wilnelia Merced won the title in 1975.

First runner-up was Yaritza Miguelina Reyes Ramirez of the Dominican Republic, followed by Miss World Indonesia Natasha Mannuela. Miss Philippines Catriona Elisa Gray and Miss Kenya Evelyn Njambi also made it to the final five. Indian contestant Priyadarshini Chatterjee could not make it into the top 10.

Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar was crowned as the new Maharaja of of Mysuru (Mysore) royal family. He is the 23-year old grandson of Princess Gayathri Devi, who was the eldest daughter of the last Maharaja of Mysore, Sri Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar. The coronation was held at Mysuru’s famous Amba Vilas Palace, which was decked up for the occasion.
