train-accident-kanpur-2016

1) At least 120 were people feared killed when 14 coaches of an express train derailed in the early hours on 20 November 2016 near Pukhrayan in Kanpur Dehat district of Uttar Pradesh. Which train was involved in this accident, which is the biggest train accident in last 6 years? – Indore-Rajendranagar Express

Explanation: Rajendranagar (Patna) bound Indore- Rajendranagar Express (Train No. 19321) was involved in a massive accident on 20 November 2016 as 14 coaches of the train derailed at around 3:10 am at Hasemau village between Pukhrayan and Malasa stations in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur Dehat district. The spot of the accident is around 57 km. from Kanpur.

S-2 and S-3 were the worst affected coaches while numerous other coaches also bore the brunt in this derailment. At least 115 persons died in the accident.  While the exact cause of the accident will be ascertained after inquiry report, prima facie it indicates towards rail fracture.

This was the worst train accident in the country since the train accident at in West Bengal on 28 May 2010 involving derailment of Gyaneshwari Express in which at least 170 persons were killed.

2) Olympic silver medalist P.V. Sindhu clinched the first-ever Super Series Premier Badminton title of her career on 20 November 2016. She achieved this distinction by winning which title? – China Open Super Series

Explanation: Ace Indian badminton player P.V. Sindhu clinched her maiden Super Series Premier title after edging out Sun Yu of China in the final of the $700,000 China Open Super Series tournament on 20 November 2016.

She defeated the local favourite Yu by 21-11, 17-21, 21-11 in the summit clash that lasted an hour and nine minutes. With this maiden title win, Sindhu became the second Indian player to win this prestigious tournament. Saina Nehwal had won the title in 2014.

China Open Super Series tournament was hosted at the Haixia Olympic Sports Center in Fuzhou.

3) The Dalai Lama, the exiled spiritual leader of Buddhists, visited and gave sermons in which country on 19 November 2016, a move that risked this country’s ties with China? – Mongolia

Explanation: The exiled Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama on 19 November 2016 preached thousands of supporters at the Gandantegchenlin monastery in Mongolia. With this he kick-started his 4-day visit of the landlocked neighbour of China.

However, this visit is set to test Mongolia’s ties with China at a time when it is seeking a critical aid package from its powerful neighbour. A day earlier on 18 November China’s Foreign Ministry had strongly urged Mongolia to deny the Dalai Lama a visit.  China has protested previous visits by the Dalai Lama by briefly closing its border in 2002 and temporarily canceling flights from Beijing in 2006.

China views the Dalai Lama as a separatist seeking to split Tibet from China and strongly opposes all countries from hosting the monk, who has been based in India since fleeing Tibet during an abortive uprising against Chinese rule in 1959.

4) What is the name given to the state-wide centralised emergency response system of Uttar Pradesh that was launched by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on 19 November 2016? – UP-100

Explanation: UP-100 is the name of the newly launched state-wide centralised emergency response system of Uttar Pradesh. It primarily aims to reduce police response time to 20 minutes in villages and 15 in urban areas.

According to the Chief Minister, many a times, there are complaints that phone calls are not attended by the police. Now this complaint will be removed with UP-100. Till now it was the victim who had to run to the police but now it will be the other way round.

Explanation: Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar, a judge of the Supreme Court, was on 18 November 2016 appointed the new Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA). He succeeded Anil R. Dave.

NALSA has been constituted under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, to provide free legal services to weaker sections of society. It also organises Lok Adalats for amicable settlement of disputes.

6) Mauritius President Ameenah Gurib Fakim on 18 November 2016 inaugurated India’s first genetic garden of naturally occurring salt-tolerant plants called halophytes. This genetic garden has been established in which state? – Tamil Nadu

Explanation: India’s first-of-its-kind genetic garden of naturally occurring salt-tolerant plants (halophytes) has been established at the coastal town of Vedaranyam in Tamil Nadu. It has been set up by the M S Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF).

Mauritius President Ameenah Gurib Fakim inaugurated the garden through video-conferencing on 18 November 2016.

Halophytes tolerate salinity and could grow in saline affected regions. Their seeds contain high oil (30%) and protein (35%) like soyabeans and other oilseed crops and the salt content is less than three per cent.

He is the 23-year old grandson of Princess Gayathri Devi, who was the eldest daughter of the last Maharaja of Mysore, Sri Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar. The coronation was held at Mysuru’s famous Amba Vilas Palace, which was decked up for the occasion.
