1) India defeated which team in the finals of the Junior Hockey World Cup 2016 on 18 December 2016 to win the prestigious title for the second time? – Belgium

Explanation: India defeated Belgium by 2-1 in the finals of the Junior Hockey World Cup 2016 to become the first host team to win the title. This was Indian hockey’s first-ever world-level title in 15 years, the last being its maiden win in the same competition in 2001.

In the final India attacked from the word go and kept the pressure throughout the match on first-time finalists Belgium. In terms of possession, circle entries, and shots on target, India dominated every department of the game.

Gurjant Singh gave India the lead through a brilliant reverse hit in the 8th minute. Simranjeet doubled the lead in 22nd minute. Belgium scored their goal in the dying seconds through Fabrice van Bockrijck but it only changed the scoreline, not the result.

Enrique Gonzalez de Castejon of Spain was named player of the tournament while Edward Horler (England) was the leading scorer with 8 goals.

The 2016 Men’s Hockey Junior World Cup was the 11th edition of the Hockey Junior World Cup (for men) and was played at Lucknow’s Major Dhyan Chand Stadium from 8 to 18 December 2016.

2) The Union Govt. notified the new Income Declaration Scheme (IDS) along with other provisions of the Taxation Laws (Second Amendment) Act, 2016 on 16 December 2016. The scheme came into effect from 17 December 2016. What is the deadline to declare unaccounted income under this scheme? – ‘31 March 2017’

Explanation: Tax evaders can declare their unaccounted income till 31 March 2017 under the government’s new income disclosure scheme (IDS), officially known as the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana.

This is the second such income disclosure scheme brought in by the government this year, and the first after the cancellation of old high-value banknotes on 8 November 2016, gives tax evaders another chance to come clean. The first scheme closed on 30 September 2016.

Under the scheme, a declarant of undisclosed income needs to pay a tax of 30%, a penalty of 10% and a Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Cess of 33% on the tax, all of which add up to around 50%.

In addition, the declarant will have to deposit 25% of the undisclosed income in the zero-interest ‘Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Deposit Scheme’ for four years. The declarant needs to furnish his/her permanent account number (PAN) while making the declaration. Part of the proceeds of the scheme will be used for welfare schemes for the poor.

3) The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Bill, 2016 was passed by Parliament as the Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on 16 December 2016. This bill is replacing the Persons with Disabilities Act, 1995. Under the new act, the total types of disabilities mentioned are – 21

Explanation: The types of disabilities under Rights of Persons with Disabilities Bill, 2016 have been increased from existing 7 to 21. Apart from this, the Central Government will have the power to add more types of disabilities.

Speech and Language Disability and Specific Learning Disability have been added for the first time. Acid Attack Victims have been included. Dwarfism, muscular dystrophy have has been indicated as separate class of specified disability. The New categories of disabilities also included three blood disorders, Thalassemia, Hemophilia and Sickle Cell disease.

Additional benefits such as reservation in higher education, government jobs, reservation in allocation of land, poverty alleviation schemes etc. have been provided for persons with benchmark disabilities and those with high support needs.

4) On 17 December 2016 who was appointed the next Chief of the Indian Army, an appointment which became controversial as it was done by superseding two senior Lt. Generals? – Lt. General Bipin Rawat

Explanation: Lt. General Bipin Rawat was appointed as the next Chief of the Indian Army on 17 December 2016. His appointment became a controversial one, as it was done superseding two senior-most Lt. Generals, Praveen Bakshi and P. M. Hariz.

Lt. Gen Rawat, who is currently Vice Chief of Army Staff, will take over as the 26th Chief after Gen. Dalbir Singh Suhag retires on 31 December 2016. Rawat is an Infantry officer, having been commissioned in the Fifth Battalion of the Eleven Gorkha Rifles.

The only other time the senior-most officer has not been appointed Chief was in 1983, when Lt. Gen S.K. Sinha was overlooked for the post in favour of Gen. A.S. Vaidya.

It is worth mentioning that Lt. Gen Bakshi, who heads the Kolkata-headquartered Eastern Command, is from the Armoured Corps. On the other hand, Lt. Gen Hariz, who is from the Mechanised Infantry, heads the Pune-headquartered Southern Command.

5) Who was appointed the next Chief of the Indian Air Force (IAF) on 17 December 2016? – Air Marshal B.S. Dhanoa

Explanation: Air Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa will be the 22nd Chief of the Indian Air Force (IAF), replacing Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha who retires at the end of the year.

Commissioned in the IAF in June 1978 as a fighter pilot, he is a Qualified Flying Instructor and has flown various types of fighter aircraft in his distinguished career. During the Kargil operations, he commanded a fighter squadron and himself flew numerous night strike missions over mountainous terrain. He was till now Vice Chief of the IAF.

Prior to being appointed Vice Chief, he was Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the South-Western Air Command.

6) Who was appointed as the new Chief of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), the external intelligence wing of India? – Anil Dhasmana

Explanation: Anil Dhasmana will take over the reins of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), the organisation that looks after the external intelligence of the country. He will succeed Rajinder Khanna who completes his tenure this year end.

Dhasmana, a 1981-batch officer of Madhya Pradesh cadre, has been with RAW for the last 23 years during which he has served on important desks including Pakistan.

7) Who was appointed as the next Chief of the Intelligence Bureau on 17 December 2016? – Rajiv Jain

Explanation: Jharkhand cadre IPS officer Rajiv Jain has been appointed as the new chief of Intelligence Bureau (IB). He is currently serving as the Special Director in the IB.

A recipient of President’s Police Medal, the 1980-batch officer has served in various departments of the IB including the sensitive Kashmir desk. He was advisor to the previous NDA government’s interlocutor on Kashmir K C Pant when talks were held with separatist leaders like Shabbir Shah.

Jain will take over on 1 January 2017 after the incumbent Dineshwar Sharma completes his two-year tenure on 31 December 2016.

8) Indian professional boxer Vijender Singh defeated which boxer Tanzanian boxer by a technical knock-out on 17 December 2016 to successfully defend his WBO title? – Francis Cheka

Explanation: Indian star boxer Vijender Singh’s juggernaut in professional boxing rolled on as his won his eighth consecutive bout of his career on 17 December 2016. He defeated Tanzanian boxer Francis Cheka by a technical knockout (TKO) to retain WBO Asia-Pacific Super Middleweight title.

Vijender landed the winning blow in the third round of what was to be a 10-round contest with Cheka. It is worth mentioning that Vijender has now won all his eight bouts since he turned professional on October 2015. Of these, 7 wins have been by knockout.

Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar was crowned as the new Maharaja of of Mysuru (Mysore) royal family. He is the 23-year old grandson of Princess Gayathri Devi, who was the eldest daughter of the last Maharaja of Mysore, Sri Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar. The coronation was held at Mysuru’s famous Amba Vilas Palace, which was decked up for the occasion.

Swpp Blatter, was re-elected as FIFA president for a fifth term at the 65th Annual Congress of FIFA held at Zurich for four year term.

Prince Ali bin al-Hussein of Jordan stood against Blatter in this election. It is worth mentioning that FIFA is going through a major controversy regarding corruption in the organisation with two FIFA vice presidents and a recently elected FIFA executive committee member still in custody.
